Description: Technical Standards outline essential abilities necessary for completion of a physician assistant curriculum. Students with disabilities must meet them with or without accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A current evaluation of Technical Standards identifies them as creating admission and diversity barriers to incoming students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participant will be able to: Define critical elements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that must be addressed within the context of well writtenTechnical Standards
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to: When provided with copies of Technical Standards the participant will be able to identify functional and organic elements addressing disabilities and their accommodations
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to: Provide a rationale for improved Technical Standards content to increase the numbers of physician assistants with disabilities
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to: Analyze the effects healthcare providers have on patient populations when increased diversity choices are presented to prospective patients
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to: Return to their respective institutions and perform a critical evaluation of Technical Standards for their programs and other health professional programs
